TROOP 153 FIRST YEAR SCOUT PROGRAM |
Goal: The goal for the first year scouts is to complete the First Class rank during their first year in the Troop. The following is a short outline of this process and a list of the opportunities that will be available in our Troop.
When the Scouts graduate into the Troop, the first item on the agenda is for them to complete the Joining Requirements (page 17) in the Boy Scout Handbook. These requirements are the same as those that the Scouts worked on as part of their Arrow of Light requirements. So, this should be a quick review and then they will receive their first badge (Boy Scout Badge).
Upon completing the requirements for the Boy Scout badge, they will start working on the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class requirements. As stated above, the primary focus the first year is to complete all of these ranks. In addition, there will be opportunities for them to work on a few merit badges along the way.
Summer Camp – The first year Scouts are encouraged to attend Summer Camp at Camp Tahuaya (June 13-19). Registration is already under way. These Scouts will be participating in the Baden-Powell Program which concentrates on the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. Those that participate in this program will complete approx. 80% of these requirements. The rest will be completed as part of our Troop activities (Troop Meetings, Campouts, etc.)
Note to Parents: It is a big help if the parents have reviewed the requirements in the Boy Scout Handbook for these ranks. Notice that there are activities such as campouts and other Troop activities that are required as part of the advancement. Those Scouts that participate in all of the Troop activities (Troop meetings and Campouts) will advance quicker than those that do not. All of our Troop activities include work on advancement requirements. We work on some requirements at the Troop meetings and other requirements can only be done on the campouts.
The Scouts should wear their Scout Uniform and bring their Scout Handbook to all meeting and campouts. Eventually, each Scout should have a complete Scout Uniform which includes Scout Shirt, Scout Pants (Shorts or Long Pants), Scout Belt, Scout Socks, and Scout Hat. After the Scouts have earned a few merit badges, they should also have a merit badge sash. They will be required to wear their Scout Uniforms at the Troop Meetings and on Campouts and at Summer Camp. Troop T-Shirts are also available. We have a few Boy Scout uniform items that have been out grown by older Scouts. Before purchasing any of the above items, please contact us and we can check to see if we have anything you could use. There is no charge for these items.
